The term “First Lady” is an unofficial title for a President’s wife but in Nigeria, it has received near-official status due to the fact that funding and staff have been allocated to First Ladies since independence.

However, the Nigerian Constitution does not in any way provide for the “office” of the First Lady. This was the reason given by President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari when he said during an interview with Daily Trust in December 2014 that there would be no such office during his regime.“
The [office of] First Lady is not in the constitution, so there’s no official role for them,” Buhari said.

Mrs Buhari also expressed support for her husband’s position while speaking during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Women Campaign Council in January. “When my husband is elected as the president of this country, he will rule the country within the rule of law based on the constitution of the country,” she said.

“If the office of the first lady is constitutionally recognized, he will not tamper with it but if it is not, that's okay. For me I will perform my duties and role as the wife of the President of Nigeria traditionally,” she added.

1. Harder to rig: Past elections have been marred by serious irregularities and suspicions of rigging. In 2007 observers said the presidential poll was not "credible". In 2011 the vote was considered to be better run but observers said that rigging and fraud still took place. This time the electoral commission took more steps to prevent rigging, including new biometric voters cards. Also President Jonathan's party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), had lost control of some key states which meant it could not control the electoral process there.

2. Boko Haram and security; The Nigerian army has made some recent gains against Book Haram, but not enough to convince Nigerians The election took place against the background of an Islamist insurgency in the north-east of the country. The Boko Haram militant group has killed 20,000 people and forced some three million others from their homes and President Jonathan was criticised for not getting to grips with this. The poll was delayed for six weeks to give time for the security situation to improve, but even though most areas controlled by Boko Haram were recaptured, it seems to have come too late for many people.

3. United opposition, crumbling PDP; The extra six weeks of vigorous campaigning by the PDP was not enough to halt the slide in the party's fortunes the PDP has been described as an election-winning machine. When it was created it united a northern elite with leading politicians from the south, but that alliance has broken up and the party lost some key figures. Even former President Olusegun Obasanjo came out against MrJonathan. At the same time, the opposition managed to unite under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner. The last six weeks of desperate and dirty campaigning, in which the APC responded in kind, was not enough to turn the tide.

4. Economy; Nigeria's economy is growing but the wealth is not being spread around Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer and its largest economy, but many fail to feel the benefits with nearly half the population living below the poverty line. Continued corruption is seen as partly being to blame. National income is due to grow by more than 5% this year and next year, but people did not seem in the mood to thank Mr Jonathan for this.

5. Time for a change; APC supporters chanted "change" wherever they went and it seems to have caught the mood. The PDP has been in power since the end of military rule in 1999, and 2015 is the year that Nigerians decided that someone else should have a go at sorting things out. President-elect Buhari now has to prove he really can change things.

Controversial Nigerian actress, Afrocandy, has expressed her decision to stay away from Nigeria if former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, is declared winner of the presidential election held over the weekend.

The General Conduct of the Election?

With INEC’s promise of a clean and fair election with all 14 candidates signing a binding ‘non-violent & credible election‘ agreement, the 2015 Presidential election will go down in Nigeria’s political history as the most keenly contested one since democracy returned in 1999.

How the electoral system work?

Before a presidential candidate can be declared as the winner by INEC, He must be;

>> The presidential candidate with the most votes; So far out of 19 States APC (GMB) has a vote of 8,520,436 while PDP (GEJ) has a vote of 6,488,210.. Hence the APC candidate is leading in this aspect..

>> The presidential candidate must gains at least 25% of the votes in two-thirds (24 states) of Nigeria’s 36 states; So far APC (GMB) has 25% votes in 14 state while PDP (GEJ) has 25% votes in 16 state.. Hence the PDP candidate is leading in this aspect..

The way forward?

Once votes have been counted, the results from each polling unit (PU) will be uploaded to the electoral commission’s website. INEC says it expects to announce the final results within 48 hours. If none of the presidential candidates fail to meet the criteria mentioned above i.e. the candidate with the highest votes does not have the required vote spread in Nigeria and no clear winner is produced, a run-off election is conducted between the 2 closest candidates. Victory in a run-off election is by simple majority.

Is INEC prepared for the Run-off Election?

The law states a run-off election must be held within seven days which INEC has said it is doubtful if a run-off vote could be organized in a week.

Jega And APC Fault Fani Kayode Over PDP 23 State Victory Claim...

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and the All Progressives Congress have faulted the claim by the spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, Femi Fani-Kayode, that his party is leading in 23 states out of the 36 states in the country in Saturday’s presidential election.

While Jega said he was miffed by the comment and does not know the source, the APC said it was a way of laying the ground for the rigging of the election by the PDP. Jega also described the comment as that by someone partisan.

Jega said during a press conference on Sunday: ”I don't know the sources of such information.The results have not been collated in 23 states.“Fairly very few states have actually collated.“In fact, only two states have been collated.“There is the need to be careful about the information being put there by people who are clearly partisan.”

ABEOKUTA-The Independent National Electoral Commission has released results of Presidential election in 10 local governments in Ogun State.Out of the results of the 10 local government areas councils released as at 2:pm on Sunday in Abeokuta, All Progressives Congress won seven with wide margin while People’s Democratic Party won the remaining three local government areas.

River State Governor Rotimi Amaechi Refuses Accreditation Over Missing Result Shits..

Live from Port Harcourt: Governor Chibuike Amaechi Saturday morning refused to be accredited for the elections in his Ubima ward, Ikwerre local government area saying result sheets were missing among items the Independent National Electoral Commission came with for the exercise.

Former governor of Rivers state, Dr Peter Odili also lamented the failure of card reader machines in Ward 14, Unit 25, Ogba Egbert Ndoni local government area.

A bomb explosion has reportedly rocked a polling unit at the WTC Primary School, Enugu, Saturday morning. WTC Primary School is located at Enugu North, one of the municipal local government areas in the Coal City State.

The Anti-bomb disposal unit just detonated one of the bombs as at the time of filling this report. Although journalists are unable to gain entrance to the place, a source said the bomb was laden in a Honda Baby Jeep.

INEC Postpone Election in 7 Federal Constituency In....

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Jigawa state has announced the postponement of election in seven out of eleven federal constituencies.

According to the resident electoral commissioner in the state, Alhaji Halliru Aliyu Tambawel, the postponement was as a result of lack of sensitive materials including ballot papers and results sheets from the Central Bank of Nigeria to be used for the elections.

He said the federal constituencies where there would be a postponement includes Dutse/Kiyawa, Ringim/ Taura, HadeJia/Kafin Hausa/Auyo, and Jahun Miga federal Constituencies of Jigawa state, others include Gumel/Maigatari/Sule tankarkar/ Gagarawa, Kaugama/Malam-madori and Gwaram Federal constituencies.

APC Reacts To Patience Jonathan Statemen Describing Buhari As "Brain Dead"...

The APC has described as insulting the recent remarks by first lady Patience Jonathan that its presidential candidate, General Buhari is brain dead.

At a PDP Presidential rally in Kogi state on Wednesday March 3rd, the First Lady reportedly described the former Military Leader as brain dead "Wetin him dey find again? Him dey drag with himpikin mate. Old man wey no get brain, him brain don die pata pata.” she reportedly said in pidgin English.

The APC reacted to the insult in a statement released yesterday March 4th, describing her comments as demeaning.

"It is not only insulting for Mrs. Jonathan to describe Buhari as “brain-dead, it is also demeaning of her status as the President’s wife to speak in the manner with which she did. It was discourteous and inexcusable for a wife of any President with a modicum of decency to make such a false and infantile pronouncement about the health status of another man on account of politics.

The APC Presidential Campaign Organization similarly observed that much as indecent and disgraceful as the outbursts of Mrs. Jonathan was in an attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of Nigerians about her husband’s incompetence to lead the country, it is typical of the PDP’s modus operandi to confuse Nigerians with mundane issues instead of the issues of corruption, for which her husband has achieved an unbeaten record; his appalling lack of capacity to secure life and property of citizens and a glaring incompetence in dealing with the challenges facing the country.”

The statement also said it has observed that the first lady had in recent times continued to make inciting comments during any of the PDP women campaigns According to APC, Mrs. Jonathan had made statements “invoking violence like she did in Calabar over the weekend,when she urged the PDP supporters to stone all those canvassing for change.” The statement called on President Jonathan to caution his wife.

INEC Dares PDP To Prove Their Allegations against Them...

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has refuted allegations made against it by Nigeria’s ruling party, PDP, and asked the party to prove them.

The PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, PDPPCO, had alleged that the commission was deliberately preventing valid voters in certain sections of the country from getting their Permanent Voter Cards.

The campaign organisation’s spokesperson, Femi Fani-Kayode, said at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday that the PVCS were yet to be imported to Nigeria, and were still in China where they were produced.

Mr. Fani-Kayode added that INEC was deliberately distributing the PVCs in such manner as to disenfranchise many voters from North Central, South-East, South-South and South-West geo-political zones. He claimed those voters were supporters of the PDP candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan.

In his reaction, Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, told PREMIUM TIMES that the onus was on PDP campaign to validate its claims. “It is they that should produce proof that we have not produced the cards, because INEC has produced those cards and put them in the public domain. Anybody who says it is not like that should produce proof,” Mr. Idowu said.

While speaking on the millions of registered voters who were yet to collect their PVCs, Mr.Idowu said, “We have extended the collection deadline and people need to make use of that opportunity to come out.” “INEC cannot drag people out of their houses to collect their PVCs. It is for INEC and the media to continue to sound it in the ears of people that they need to make judicious use of this time; otherwise, anyone who does not collect his card will disenfranchise himself,” he added.

The electoral commission had said on Friday that over 70 per cent of the voters’ cards had been distributed. The distribution of the cards was a reason the PDP and some parties and groups called for the postponement of the elections, initially scheduled for February 14 and 28. Although the elections were eventually postponed to March 28 and April 11, that was mainly due to the statement by security agencies that they needed six weeks to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency before the elections are held.

According to the leadership news some Group known as Mass Movement for Goodluck (MMG) that alleged to have worked for the President in the 2011 general elections, has dumped President Goodluck Jonathan for the All Progressives Congress (APC)‎ presidential candidate, gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and metamorphosed into Mass Movement for Buhari (MMB).‎

Addressing the Northwest members in Kaduna, the National Coordinator of MMB, Kenneth Ibe-Kalu said President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s failure to deliver on their electoral promises and good governance prompted their action.

According to the coordinator, the ‎PDP had failed to meet the yearning and aspiration of the citizens sequel to which the people are clamouring for change. He, therefore, called on the good people clamouring for change to ‎ensure that they collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) which he said will be their voting power, just as he admonished the APC supporters to shun all forms of violence.

Responding after receiving the Northwest zone members into the ‎APC fold, Alhaji Abdulkadir commended their courage to join the change train, while assuring them that the APC government is the answer that will salvage the country from imminent collapse.‎ He urged them not to stop at just changing their nomenclature but to be proactive in the quest for change and spread the message to every nook and crannies of the country until the desired change is achieved.

“The PDP knows that their time is up and waiting only to hand over to an APC government come May, 29th, 2015, but let us not relent in sensitising people and be an ambassador of change in wherever we find ourselves.” He also tasked them not to give in to any form of provocation by the PDP, while reiterating the need for them to shun any form of violence, remain calm and carry out their activities within the ambit of the law.

Rotimi Amaechi Threatens Mass Protest If INEC Postpone Election Date..

THE director general of Buhari campaign organization and Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, has threatened mass action if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) decides today to shift this month’s election.

Amaechi, who said monumental change is about to happen in Nigeria because the vast majority of Nigerians yearn for it, insisted that the presidential election must hold on February 14 because Nigerians are charged and poised to vote on that day for an inevitable change.

He stated this during the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign rally at Isiokpo, the headquarters of his Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. Addressing thousands of APC supporters who had converged for the rally, the governor charged his kinsmen and the people of the State to vote against the president and the Peoples Democratic Party because they are adverse to the rule of law and good governance. “If PDP say there are strong, we are ready for election, let them come out.

APC has said to PDP, let us wrestle; they are running away. “If they try the postponement, we Nigerians will match out on the streets. Nigerians are charged and poised to vote on February 14,” he said. Amaechi, who observed that INEC would be meeting today with critical stakeholders to deliberate on the forthcoming elections, insisted that whether the Federal Government likes it or not, the presidential election must hold on Saturday.

According to him, Nigerians are yearning for freedom from the yoke inflicted on them by the PDP administration, which is endemically corrupt. He told the teeming audience that the APC presidential candidate remains gravely concerned about the incessant attacks on the party’s faithful in the state and has assured them that he would ensure the protection of life and property if he wins the February 14 presidential election.
